William Mosley being given a bath! In the Southwell Workhouse (1841) as seen in the Southwell Workhouse children's trail 2009 (and in posters around the site).

You've just arrived at the workhouse. ...
You and john are split up from your mother here. The Master tells you that you are to look after John as he is only small, and to make sure he behaves well and learns his lessons.

The Master sends you two to the Chidren's area of the Workhouse.

Your mother is sent to the able-bodied Women's area of the workhouse. You will only see her once a week while you are living in the workhouse - if you and she behave well!
William, John and Sarah Mosley in the Southwell Workhouse (1841) as seen in the Southwell Workhouse children's trail 2009 (and in posters around the site).

You are William Moseley, aged 9.
You are with your mother, Sarah and your brother John age 6.

Your mother was a servant in a house in Southwell. Nobody knows who your father is, but John's father is a local drunk. Your mum has lost her job because she is pregnant again and her employer doesn't want to feed another servant's child with his hard-earned cash. You've ended up in the workhouse because there's nonody else to look after all of you.

The sooner you get a job the better!
