Local News Fatal Accident at Kibworth (An inquest into the death of Samuel Cartwright, engine driver aged 27 years. He bent down to see how how the axle of a freight train was, and fell.) ... The driver stopped the train as quickly as possible, and the guard of the train, Amos Roebuck, went to to deceased, as did also some people of the ballast train which was following at a little distance. ... He had lost a great deal of blood before he was admitted, and he died from shock and exhaustion arising from the injuries just described - Amos Roebuck, guard of the train, said he saw deceased on the tender step feeling the leading axle box. Directly the engine got on the bridge as deceased was in a stooping position, he struck against the first girder and was lifted up. He then appeared to be drawn-in again between the girder and the train. The train was stopped about forty yards from the other end of the bridge, and he (witness) got out of his brake and went to his assistance. Deceased must have forgotten the girder, as there was no room for a person to stand between the rails and them. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.5 |

The Case of Sacrilege at Thurmaston (As well as the sacrilege of breaking and entering into Thurmaston Primitive Methodist Chapel, the defendants Charles and Jane Green had other charges against them) ... The female prisoner pawned the missing clock for 2s. 6d. in the name of Turner, of Brandon Street. It was also proved that she offered the tablecloth in pledge at Mr. Buswell's shop, and secured 2s. 3d. on it, giving the name Jane Green, of 9 Bedford Street. ... A third charge was then preferred against the man, that of breaking into the dwelling house 153, Brandon Street, Leicester, and stealing two coats, a pair of boots, and a pipe, the property of framework knitter named Wm. Stone, and another. The boots produced were identified by Wm. Stone as his property, and Mrs. Roebuck, wife of Amos Roebuck, platelayer, stated that Stone lodged with them. On the evening of Saturday December 1st, she locked up the house and went out leaving everything safe. On returning, about half-past ten with her husband they found the back door and gate wide open, and the window of the living room open about 10 inches at the bottom. On making an inspection, she missed the boots produced, and also two coats belonging to Stone, which had been hanging against a door. Her husband's meerschaum pipe was gone from the mantelpiece, and a black handbag belonging to herself , which she had left hanging by the side of the fireplace, was thrown under the table, and had one of the ends ripped out, the thief unable to open it in the ordinary way. ... The prisoner was charged with breaking and entering the dwelling-house in question, and stealing articles mentioned. Prisoner - who had nothing to say - was committed for trial at the assizes on this charge also.12 |

Run Over by Engine Aged Platelayer's Terrible Death at Leicester A shocking incident occurred yesterday morning on the Midland Railway, near the Humberstone-road bridge, a foreman platelayer, named Amos Roebuck, aged about 70, of 30, Thomas Street, being so seriously injured that he died shortly afterwards. It appeared that Roebuck, who had been in the employ of the Midland Railway Company for 50 years, was oiling some points about seven o'clock, when he was knocked down and run over by an engine attached to a number of goods wagons. The driver felt a bump, and upon stopping found that the deceased's feet were cut off, and that he had sustained serious injuries to his head and arms. He was removed immediately to the Royal Infirmary, in the fire brigade ambulance van, but died shortly after reaching the institution.21 |

Damaging Bricks - Warning to Boys (a list of boys including Edward Roper (9) and Philip Roper (7)) were charged with having committed wilful damage to bricks on the 7th of June, the property of the Corporation. Mr. Blakeway appeared for the Corporation, and stated that the defendants for some time past had been in the habit of throwing bout and damaging a quantity of bricks that had been stacked upon the quay. Three times the bricks had been stacked up and upon each occasion as soon as the men left the defendants would come and throw them about again. Some of the bricks had been thrown into the river, to the danger of steamers and boats. It was not the wish of the Corporation to ask the Bench to inflict any severe punishment upon the defendants, but they were desirous that something should be done to put a stop to the damage which was being caused. not only to the Corporation but also to private property. The Chairman said he quite concurred in the necessity of such a reprehensible practice being put a stop to - The defendants, who pleaded guilty, were each fined 6d., and the parents of the lads, after being instructed by the Chairman to given his children a proper talking to, were ordered to put 1s. in the poor box.2 |

Research* | between 1916 and 1940 | Research:Annoyingly, the only 2 Ellen Binghams who died in Nottinghamshire appear to be the same age! Could be either (neither have probate records) - but may be the Basford one? An Ellen Elizabeth Bingham marries Frederick Hossack Starks in 1905. The 1939 census index shows Ellen Bingham living with Ellen E Starks and 1 other person. Assuming the "other" Ellen Bingham (who died in 1916) didn't have an Ellen Elizabeth as a daughter then I am fairly confident that the 1940 death date is correct. |
