Maria Riley or Jealous1,2,3
F, #693, b. 1812, d. circa 1879
Name Variation | Maria Riley or Jealous was also known as Riley Surname of "Riley" in marriage entry.2
Research* | Research:Research thoughts - Riley or Jealous?? Birth certificate of later children states consistently that the mother was Maria Jealous. John Watson married a Maria Riley in the right place, at the right time. So either: These are two distinct families, and there is a missing marriage between a John Watson & Maria Jealous. The "2 families" option or Maria Riley is Maria Jealous, either because her mother remarried a Jealous, or because she herself remarried (no she was a sponster when married as a riley). The "2 names" option. or John Watson remarried - firstly Maria Riley, then Maria Jealous. The "2 wives" option. Or - simply she was known by 2 names. Maybe her mother remarried so had a different surname, and (as illiterate) she simply answered "what was your mother's name" on the certificates, later birth realising it should be her own birth name. We are missing some vital bit of information here... As John Watson is not a wholly uncommon name, I am erring on the side of "2 wives" or "2 families" options. Evidence presented here: 1833 marriage in Gedney: John Watson (of Fleet) married Maria Riley (clearly stated in marriage entry, but they were both illiterate) 1834/5 birth of Mary Ann (no baptism found) 1838 Gilbert Watson born of mother Ryley (GRO index) bapt Gedney, buried 5 weeks later 1840 Elizabeth Watson mother Jealous 1841 census - John+Maria with MaryAnn and Elizabeth in Fleet 1842 Gilbert Watson bapt Fleet, registered mother Jealous. John described as brickmaker 1844 bapt of John Watson of John&Maria (labourer) in Fleet. buried 4 days later. GRO birth ref did not give mothers surname (or was not registered). 1845 birth of Sarah Watson bapt Fleet (John a labourer) mother names "Jealons" at birth reg. Buried Gedney 1850. 2 death entries age 5 in Holbeach 1848 daughter Sarah Jane bap fleet reg mother as "Riley" 1850 son John William mother: Riley 1851 John & Maria in Gedney Dike with remaining family Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Gilbert, Sarah Jane (as "Jane"), and John William. (which surely means this is a single family unit ...?) 1855 - family set sail on Nimroud for Austraila.

- Why "Riley or Jealous"? Marriage states Maria Riley. Birth certificates of children (Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Gilbert) state "Maria Watson formerly Jealous". So is this the same pairing?
