| Research | Research:Biography Born in Blackheath, London, Rampling won the British AAA championships in the 440 yd (400 m) in 1931 and 1934. At the 1932 Summer Olympics, Rampling was fourth in his semifinal in the individual 400 metre event and didn't reach the final, but ran the anchor leg to help the British 4×400 m relay team win the silver medal, behind the United States. At the 1934 British Empire Games in London, Rampling won the 440 yd (400 m), and helped the English 4×440 yards relay team to capture the gold medal. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Rampling was again fourth in the semifinals of 400 metre competition and ran the second leg in the gold medal winning British 4x400 m relay team. Rampling was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Artillery, attached to NATO, until retiring in 1958 after 29 years service.[1] His daughter Charlotte Rampling is a noted film actress. He was, as of October 2007, the last surviving male athletics medallist from the 1932 Summer Olympics and the last male gold medallist in athletics from the 1936 Summer Olympics. Rampling was Britain's oldest living Olympic Gold medallist[1] and also oldest living Olympic competitor.[2] He celebrated his centenary with his family, including daughter Charlotte Rampling, on 14 May 2009 at Bushey in Hertfordshire.[1] Rampling died in his sleep aged 100 on 20 June 2009.[3]1 | |

Sarah's younger sister grew up to be the famous actress Charlotte Rampling. Charlotte, and so presumably Sarah as well, was born in in Sturmer, Essex, England and grew up in Gibraltar, France and Spain, while their father became a British army officer after his sports career. The two sisters were close and performed in a cabaret together. Sarah married and moved to Buenos Aires, where she gave birth to a son, only to fall prey to depression. After giving birth prematurely in 1966, Sarah committed suicide two months later, in 1967 at the age of 23. At first Charlotte Rampling understood that Sarah had died of a brain haemorrhage in Buenos Aires. It was only later that she learned that Sarah had shot herself. This was kept as a family secret until their mother Isabel died in 2001. Charlotte thinks it was postnatal depression, but says, “it was very unstable before as well. It was the whole thing combined. We didn’t know so much. She was abroad all the time. She was in the Argentine. We didn’t have the language at all. And people didn’t talk about it. It was pushed under the carpet.”.1 |

There were four bridesmaids, Miss Peggy Ratcliff, sister, Miss Phyllis Lill, sister of the groom, Miss Constance Margereson, cousin of the bride, and Miss Marjorie Hannah. They wore dresses of white taffeta with pale green velvet sashes and small hats composed of green flowers. Their bouquets consisted of marguerites. Mr. Anthony Mountain, of Skegness, was best man. The bride's mother wore a dress of white organdie, with a navy lace coat, a white hat made of petals, and navy veil, and carried pink carnations. Report on front Page. // (front page) Skegness Man weds Sir Thomas Shipstone's Grand-daughter Nottinghamshire Knight Attends marriage at Lenton Parish Church Unusual features of pretty ceremony Mr. Philip Lill to Miss Molly Ratcliff An exchange of rings by the bride and bridegroom and singing of the hymn "O Perfect Love" by the whole congregation kneeling, were two unusual and charming features of a marriage ceremony at Nottingham last Saturday, which a number of well known Skegness people attended as guests. The marriage, which attracted considerable interest in Nottingham was that of centred in the wedding which took place at Lenton Parish Church to-day. Mr. Philip R. Lill, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Lill, of The Angles, Drummond Road, Skegness to Miss Molly Ratcliff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Ratcliff, of Lenton Hurst, Derby Road, Nottingham. The bride is a granddaughter of Sir Thomas Shipstone, and the Nottinghamshire knight who, as head of the famous firm of brewers and licenced victuallers of James Shipstone and Sons, Ltd., has extensive interest in the Midland counties and in Skegness, where he is well known, attended both the ceremony and the reception which followed. Sales manager of Skegness Concern As announced in the "Skegness News" last week, when certain details of this interesting event were revealed, the marriage was the culmination of a romance which began six years ago when Mr. Lill first met Miss Ratcliff at Skegness, the engagement being announced two years ago whilst he was paying a visit to her family in Paignton. Mr. Lill is well known throughout Lincolnshire and Notts. as the sales manager of the Skegness Cast Stone Works, an enterprise which is largely conducted by the bridegroom and his older brother. Lenton Parish Church, where ye marriage was solemnised, was beautifully decorated for the occasion, the chancel being a mass of flowers with white the predominating colour. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. J. R. Skipper, Vicar of Lenton. Two and a half yards train Given away by her father, the bride was an exceedingly pretty picture in her beautiful wedding dress of close-fitting white satin, with very full skirt flowing out from the train, edged all round with a narrow band of rucked satin. The bodice was gathered in front, and the neckline trimmed with a garland of orange blossom and stefanotis. The sleeves were ling and tight-fitting, being buttoned at the wrist. She also wore a halo headdress of orange blossom, and a veil of white Brussels net, worn over her face on entering the church. Her bouquet was of white roses and stefanotis. Four bridesmaids There were four bridesmaids, Miss Peggy Ratcliff, sister, Miss Phyllis Lill, sister of the groom, Miss Constance Margereson, cousin of the bride, and Miss Marjorie Hannah. Their dresses were of white taffeta - close fitting but flowing out at the hem-line, with square necks and elbow-length sleeves puffed at the shoulder, and green velvet sashes. They wore tiny hats of green flowers and carried bouquets of marguerites.Their gold bracelets were the gift of the bridegroom. The best man was Mr. W. A. (Tony) Mountain, of Skegness, and Messrs. Douglas Lill (the bridegroom's brother), Fred A. Cox and Cyril Denby were groomsmen. Exchange of Rings An unusual and charming feature which has already been mentioned was the exchange of rings at the high altar, the bride receiving from the chief bridesmaid the ring which she placed on the bridegroom's finger coincident with the bridegroom's receiving the wedding ring from the best man. The service was fully choral, with the Lenton Boy's choir in attendance and Mr. C. Pickard at the organ. Wagner's bridal march from "Lohengrin" was played as the bride entered the church, and the hymn "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling," was followed by the dinging of the Twenty-Third Psalm, "The Lord is My Shepherd," by the Boys' Choir. The second hymn, "O Perfect Love," was sung by the whole congregation kneeling, and the happy couple left the church to the strains of Mendelsson's Wedding March from "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The bride's mother wore a dress of white organdie with navy lace coat, and a white hat made of petals and navy veil, and carried pink carnations. The bridegroom's mother wore a two-piece beige dress and a beige hat and carried a bouquet of pink roses. Skegness Guests Attend Reception Over 100 guests, including some thirty from Skegness, attended the subsequent reception at Lenton Hurst, where the customary felicitatious toasts were proposed. That of the newly-married couple was proposed by Comdr. G. Mackness, R.N., the bride's uncle, the bridegroom responding, while that of the bridesmaids was submitted by Mr. Mountain. Mr. Geo. F. Ball, F. A. I., and Mr. W. F. Wills A.R.I.B.A., both of Skegness, submitted the toasts of the bride's parents and bridegroom's parents respectively, the responses being made by Mr. Radcliff and Mr. H. Lill. The three-tiered wedding cake was of horseshoe shape, and also ornamented with silver horseshoes. Later the happy couple left by car for the honeymoon in Cornwall, the bride travelling in a blue woollen marocain two-piece suit with a large spray of pink roses and fern, and a black French sailor's hat. They had arranged to break their journey at Bath, travelling on to Newquay on the following day. Interesting Gifts The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a gold wristlet watch, and the bride's reciprocal gift the gold ring which was used in the ceremony. Cheques from the parents on both sides, one from Sir Thomas Shipstone, and one from Mr. Ronald Shipstone, were included among the large number of presents received from the young couple's many friends in Nottingham and Skegness. One interesting gift was that from the Nottingham branch of the British legion, and a further cheque represented the combined gifts of employees of the Skegness Cast Stone Works and the building enterprises of the bridegroom's father, the subscription being completed at too late a date to allow of a specific present being purchased. The employees of these local concerns under Mr. H. Lill's control also sent a telegram of congratulations. Mr. and Mrs. Lill''s future address will be "Wide-a-wake", Seacroft Esplanade, Skegness, where they will take up residence at the end of this month. Mrs Mabel Frances Ratcliff (nee Shipstone) of Lenton Hurst, Derby Road, Nottingham, yesterday petitioned before Lord Merrivale, in the Divorce Court, for a dissolution of her marriage with her husband, Mr. Mortimer Frederick Ratcliff, on the grounds of his adultery with Mrs. Margaret Sylvia Coates. Mr. Ratcliff denied adultery, and Mrs. Coates intervened in the suit to contest the allegation. The petition was dismissed. According to the petitioner's case, Mrs. Ratcliff, daughter of Sir Thomas Shipstone, was married secretly to Mr. Ratcliff at the Nottingham Register Office in February 1912, and there was another ceremony at All Souls' Church, Nottingham, in May of the same year. There were three children. In May 1930, there was a separation, and Mrs. Ratcliff's allegation was that her husband had been associated with Mrs. Coates since 1929. Mrs. Ratcliff gave evidence, and called as witnesses Mr. Arthur Powdrill, ex-inspector of Police, and an enquiry agent of Nottingham, Dr. Henry Vernon Taylor of Mansfield-Road Nottingham, and Walter Clark, chauffeur, of Clarence Street, Nottingham. Mr. Ratcliff, the respondent, gave evidence. His case was that he never knew Mrs. Coates until January, 1931, and then he occasionally met her on terms of ordinary friendship. Mrs. Coates, the wife of Herbert Coates, whom she married in October, 1926, also gave evidence denying the charge. Substantial Fortune. In the result, Lord Merrivale dismissed the petition and dismissed the intervenor for the suit. In his judgement, his Lordship said the case was a painful one. Mrs. Ratcliff was possessed of a substantial fortune. Mr. Ratcliff discussed intimate matters with his wife in a way which greatly displeased her. A separation took place. It appeared, however, that the wife knowing her husband's temperament, began to suspect him and desired to be rid of her marriage tie. She had her husband watched by Mr. Powdrill, but although he watched for six weeks he could report nothing except social intimacy. Mrs Coates was a young woman whose father died when she was little more than a child, and she married Mr. Coates as his second wife. She was the mother of four of his children. Her husband had come to court to stand by her, and had stated that his wife has full confidence and he considered that the charges were not true. Mrs. Coates had not been shown to be a woman who would yield to such proposals. Her husband said that he never had the slightest need to suspect his wife. "I have come to the conclusion" proceeded Lord Merrivale, "that the visit of Mrs. Coates to Lenton Hurst in August, 1929, is an invention or a mistake. It did not take place. I am not even satisfied that Mr. Ratcliff was there that day. His Lordship added that Mr. Ratcliff was a successful man of business, trusted by his father-in-law, Sir Thomas Shipstone. Mr. Coates's confidence had been well founded. Lord Merrivale ordered that Mrs. Coates should have the costs of her defence as against Mrs. Ratcliff. "She has had charges made against her which might well have ruined her life, if not contested," he said. "Mr. Ratcliff has laid himself under suspicion, and the only order that I make about his costs is that he shall have paid out to him the costs he paid into court as security." M. lee officiated at the wedding of Mr. Ernest May of North End, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. William May, of Swineshead, and Miss Clarice Reams, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reams, of Kirton Holme House. The bride who was given away by her father, wore a dress of white satin beaute, with veil supported by a coronet of orange blossom, and carried a bouquet of red roses, white heather and trailing fern. The attendants were the Misses Lily May (sister of the bridegroom) and Doris Lighton (friend of the bride) and little maid Sheila Grantham. The two elder bridesmaids were dressed in shell pink satin beaute, with net caps and hose to tone, and wore sprays of pink gladioli and fern, while the younger maid wore a blue satin floral dress, poke bonnet in Early Victorian style and carried a posy of red roses. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr. F. Reams (brother of the bridegroom). Mrs. S. Willingham, the bride's sister, presided at the organ, and played the "Londonderry Air" as the bride entered the church, and later the Wedding march. the service was choral, the hymns "Gracious Spirit" and "Lead us Heavenly Father" being sung. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the bride's home after which the happy couple left for their honeymoon which is being spent in Bridlington, the bride travelling in a navy two-piece costume, an old rose velour hat, and navy shoes and hose. Kirton Holme - Amber Hill Alliance (picture) A very pretty wedding of considerable local interest took place on Whit Monday afternoon at St. Gilbert's Church, Brothertoft. Both the contracting parties being very well-known in the district. The bride was Miss Freda Mary Reams, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reams, of Holme House, Kirton Holme, and the bridegroom was Mr. Stanley Willingham, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Willingham, of Sutterton Drove, Amber Hill. The bride who was charmingly dressed in white satin and lace and white veil, was given away by her father. She was attended by four bridesmaids, Miss Clarice Reams, her sister, and Misses Phyllis and Florence Willingham, sister of the bridegroom, and little Sheila Grantham, her niece. The bride carried a bouquet of carnations, and the bridesmaids bouquets of white and pink pyrethrums. The bridesmaids' dresses were of yellow, figured with small pink flowers, and made a pretty picture. Mr. Thomas Cook was the best man. The nuptial ceremony was performed by the vicar, including two hymns "Lead us, Heavenly Father", and "Praise my soul the King of Heaven". Mrs. I. S. Bennett was at the organ. A reception was held at the bride's home, Holme House. The honeymoon is being spent in East Yorkshire, and the future residence of the happy couple is to be Amber Hill. The bride and bridegroom were the lucky recipients of many useful presents, one being a tea service from parishioners of Kirton Holme and Hubbert's Bridge.
