(Subject) Newspaper | 24 December 1880 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 24 December 1880. Distributions of School Prizes At Bath-Street, in the afternoon, Mr. Angrave, the head master, gave Mr. Barwick a good opportunity of forming an opinion of both the discipline and system of education followed in a modern elementary school, as there was a large attendance of the boys, who took part in a programme of musical selections in very good style. The prizes consisting of writing-desks, books, drawing certificates etc., were numerous, and Mr. Barwick, in presenting them, stated in the course of a few remarks appropriate to the occasion, that a sum of £2 10s. had been contributed to the school by a number of artisans for the purposes of providing prizes for the children. He also announced that the report of Her Majesty's Inspector had been received that morning and was even more satisfactory than on previous occasions - Mr. Cockayne presided at the distribution, which in part was made by Mrs. Paton in the girls' department (of which Mrs. Bramley is head mistress), and there briefly addressed the scholars, whose singing was one of the features of the proceedings.4 |
