| Research* | April 2006 | Research: I have the birth of Elizabeth Watson born Dec 17 1840 Gedney Lincolnshire. I know this is the incorrect date as she was baptised on the 25 Dec 1839. Perhaps Elizabeth was born on Dec 17 1839. Elizabeth Watson is another one that slipped through our guard for a while. We found Elizabeth because when John Watson Snr, Husband of Maria, died an Otto Nelsen grand son was the informant. This sent a few bells ringing because he did not fit in. We went back to the shipping list an Elizabeth was not mention with her parents or brother and sisters. She listed by herself as Elizabeth Watson Domestic Servant Lincolnshire. Perhaps she was working as a servant on the ship to save money? Gilbert was 13 and was listed with his parents. At age 15 she would have slept in the girls section. This was the Nimroud arriving in Adelaide Jan 1 1856. 150 years ago this year. On the 30 May 1857 she married John Nelson/Nelsen from Sweden in North Adelaide South Australia. Elizabeth Nelsen died April 1912 Widow of the late John Nelsen farmer Usual Residence Harrogate. Birth place and length of residence in South Australia. England town unknown 56 years. Age at marriage 18 years Number of issues living 4 Male 5 female. Number of issues deceased 1 male 4 females. Place of death Gum Glen near Woodside. Buried Harrogate Cemetery South Australia. After losng a number of their children in England, you can see why they emigrated ... Gilbert Watson Aged 13 years.4,5 |

| Research* | May 2006 | Research: "I said in a few notes back that I had Gilbert Watson born 5 April 1842 father was John Watson brickmaker Mother Maria Jealous. I think the guy who transcribed the name for me had a hard time reading the original name and thought it was Jealous. From your information about the baptism being on 6th April 1842 and the death earlier of his brother Gilbert I believe I am correct. Gilbert arrived on the ship Nimroud in South Australia with his parents on Jan 1st 1856. He was 13 years of age when he left Southampton. Gilbert Watson married Mary Ann Skeer in Bremer Nairne (Adelaide Hills) South Australia August 15 1865. Gilbert's brother and sister also married Skeer(s) from the same family. The Skeer family came from Pluckley in Kent and lived near each other in the hills. Gilbert died May 16 1905 in Adelaide but is buried in the Adelaide Hills at Harrogate. Mary Anne died November 5 1929. I know very little about this side of the family as they lived in the Adelaide Hills. They had 11 children."7 |

| Research | between 1834 and 1850 | Research: Birth registrations are given as Riley/Ryley upto Elizabeth. Then, mother's maiden name given as Jealous for Gilbert (2) John & Sarah After 1845, mother's maiden name in Riley again for Sarah Jane & John William. Is this is same couple (Watson is a common name so very suspicious)? Yes, because in 1841, both Mary Ann and Elizabeth are in the same household. In 1851 all the living children are in the same household ... Perhaps they were supersticious and changed mother's maiden name after death of children - After death of Gilbert (1), maiden name changed to Jealous. After death of Sarah (1), maiden name reverted to Riley. Perhaps she answered incorrectly "mother's maiden name" and gave her own mothers maiden name .. I've seen it done before! (though her mother was I think a Queensborough) So still a bit of a mystery. Perhaps one of her parents changed their name and so she gave the new name sometimes (not the one her mother had when she was born). |

I have known that John and Maria Watson have been buried in Harrogate for sometime but every time we go too Adelaide we have never been able to find the time. It was nearly 143 years to the day that they arrived in Australia. The cemetery was not a big one and it was easy to spot the Watson Headstones from the photos I had in my possession. It was a warm day (40 degrees) and my stay at the cemetery was not a long one but it felt a little strange standing next to a grave of a relative that was born in 1812/1813. The cemetery could all be view from the one spot. The town consisted of a hand full of houses including one that had been a church that may have played an important part in the Watson Family."15 |
