Mr. Soloman Selka was born in 1880 at Butschowitz, Moravia, then part of the Austrian Empire, now in Czecho-Slovakia. Coming to Britain in his early twenties he spent a number of years in the service of a Bradford shipping house, in which he ultimately rose to a position of responsibility and trust. There he gained a thorough knowledge of the textile trade, and especially the export branch, which in later years he turned to such good account. In 1912, two years before the War, he became a naturalised Englishman. After the Was he formally renounced Czecho-Slovakian nationality, which, by the law of that country he had technically acquired as the result of the Treaty of Peace. In the meantime he had anchored himself more firmly to his new homeland by marrying an English wife, the daughter of the late Dr. Vinter, then head master of Woodhouse Grove School. Mr. Selka started business on his own account in 1916 as a piece goods merchant. In a few years, by dint of enterprise and hard work, he had firmly established himself both in the home and export trade and had launched out into spinning and manufacturing. He acquired successively the businesses of Henry Briggs and Co. Ltd., worsted spinners, of Highgate Mills at Clayton Heights, and of the Cranbrook Mills, Norwood Green Finally in 1931 he acquired control of James Drummond and Sons Ltd., spinners and manufacturers, of Lumb Lane Mills, Bradford. His successful rehabilitation of this extensive and old-fashioned business, which during the period of severe trade depression had fallen into difficulties and was in danger of extinction, was the crowing achievement of of his career. The plant at Lumb Lane Mills is one of the largest worsted plants in Yorkshire. Since it came under Mr. Selka's direction it has given practically uninterrupted employment to over 800 workpeople. Had it closed down during the depression hundreds of people would have been thrown out of work. Rise Achieved in Depression The business established in Mr. Selka's name had acquired too valuable a goodwill in the world's markets to allow its identity to be merged on his taking over James Drummond and Sons, so he carried it on side-by-side with the latter, transferring the office and warehouse formerly at Bond Street to Lumb Lane Mills. The looms at Norwood Green, as well as the spinning plant of Henry Briggs and Co. Ltd., were retained. Mr. Selka's rise was more notable that it was achieved in a time of unparalleled industrial and economic difficulty. He possessed a large measure of most of the qualities that make a capable leader and a successful business man. He was gifted with remarkable quickness of perception, the power to make rapid decisions and translate them into immediate action and inexhaustible energy. His capacity for work was prodigious. Few details of his extensive business he though too small for his personal attention. To his staff he set an unapproachable example of industry and efficiency. He was one of one of the earliest supporters of the Zionist movement founded by Dr. Hertz, and was always a great contributor to Jewish causes, particularly in recent years to the many appeals on behalf of Jews expatriated from the countries of their birth or adoption. He was a liberal giver to charitable causes generally. Not an actively a politician, he refuse membership of any party but supported the National Government. Mr. Selka has left a widow and five sons, two of whom are already in the business. His eldest son, Mr. Joseph Arthur Selka, came of age three months ago. A few years on from this through hard work and business enterprise and acumen he had vigorously estasblished himself in the home and export trades, soon venturing out for himself in the fields of spinning and manufacturing. He began to successfully acquire business after business, which would go onto list Henry Briggs and Co. Ltd at of Highgate Mills at Clayton Heights, which still stands today. Also in his capacities were Cranbrook Mills, Norwood Green, and eventually by 1931 he had bought James Drummond and Sons Ltd of Lumb Lane, Manningham, adjacent to the Bowland Street Synagogue. According to the Bradford Daily Telegraph of November 6th 1936, the epitome of his long and focussed career was the way he turned Drummond's as a business around, during the Great Depression of the 1930's, "His successful rehabilitation of this extensive and old-established business, which during the period of severe depression had fallen into difficulties and was in danger of extinction, was the crowing achievement of of a remarkable career". One of the largest worsted spinning plants in Yorkshire Drummond's directorship under Mr Selka prevented the loss of employment for over 800 people. He carried on his own textile business on along with the running of Drummond's, keen to keep both businesses as separate commercial entities, never desiring a merger of the two. His rise to the top of commerce was even more remarkable than others who had achieved similar endeavours as this was done during the fragilities of the worlds worst economic disaster at the time. His reputation shone through as a "just and generous employer according to the Bradford Daily Telegraph, he "understood well how to get the best out of his staff by himself setting an admirable example of industry and efficiency.". He was proud of his Jewishness, both culturally and religiously, been one of the earliest advocates of the Zionist movement, along with the Merchant and Mayor Jacob Moser. He was often a great giver to Jewish causes. Not particularly active on local political scene, he refused ardently to become joined through membership to any particular political party. Upon his death in 1936 he left behind a widow and five sons including Joseph Arthur. His funeral was held at Spring Gardens Synagogue and his body was buried at Scholemoor Cemetery in the Birks Fold Orthodox Section."4 |

Cemetery notes and/or description: The Helles Memorial stands on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula. It takes the form of an obelisk over 30 metres high that can be seen by ships passing through the Dardanelles. The eight month campaign in Gallipoli was fought by Commonwealth and French forces in an attempt to force Turkey out of the war, to relieve the deadlock of the Western Front in France and Belgium, and to open a supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea. The Allies landed on the peninsula on 25-26 April 1915; the 29th Division at Cape Helles in the south and the Australian and New Zealand Corps north of Gaba Tepe on the west coast, an area soon known as Anzac. On 6 August, further landings were made at Suvla, just north of Anzac, and the climax of the campaign came in early August when simultaneous assaults were launched on all three fronts. However, the difficult terrain and stiff Turkish resistance soon led to the stalemate of trench warfare. From the end of August, no further serious action was fought and the lines remained unchanged. The peninsula was successfully evacuated in December and early January 1916. The Helles Memorial serves the dual function of Commonwealth Battle Memorial for the whole Gallipoli campaign and place of commemoration for more than 21,000 of those Commonwealth servicemen who died there and have no known grave. The United Kingdom and Indian forces named on the memorial died in operations throughout the peninsula, the Australians at Helles. There are also panels for those who died or were buried at sea in Gallipoli waters. There are four other Memorials to the Missing at Gallipoli. The Lone Pine, Hill 60, and Chunuk Bair Memorials commemorate Australian and New Zealanders at Anzac. The Twelve Tree Copse Memorial commemorates the New Zealanders at Helles. Naval casualties of the United Kingdom lost or buried at sea are recorded on their respective Memorials at Portsmouth, Plymouth and, Chatham, in the United Kingdom.9,10 |

The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of Brussels point lace, veiled with ivory chiffon on chiffon taffeta, and had a veil of white tulle, surmounting a wreath of orange blossom. There were four bridesmaids, Miss Husband, Miss Turner, Miss Warwick and Miss Wing, who were gowned in pale mousseline de soie, trimmed with champagne point de Navarre lace, with deep swathes of tapetta chiffon, and they carried bouquets of sweet peas. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. H.H. Wing, of Sheffield, the best man. The Rev. F.R. Pyper, vicar of St. Andrew's conducted the ceremony, and Mr. F. Wyatt (in the absence of Dr. Corbett, the St. Andrew's organist), played several compositions, including Mendelsohn's Wedding March. A breakfast was served in a marquee on the lawn of Northlands, and later in the day Mr. and Mrs. Wing left for Scotland. The bride's travelling costume was of pale fawn souple cloth, tailor-made, with a little bolero disclosing a veil of pale blue chene?, gold tissue being introduced. There was a striking display of wedding presents.10 |

Shipstone and Sons' Shares Claim by two sisters allowed Judge Decides a knotty point A family dispute in regard to the holding of shares in James Shipstone and Sons, Ltd., brewers, New Basford, Nottingham, occupied the attention of Mr. Justice Luxmore in the Chancery Division yesterday. The Plaintiff, Mrs. Edith Mary Morley of Northwood, Arlington Drive, Mapperley Park, Nottingham, claimed a declaration that she was absolutely entitled to 10,666 £1 ordinary shares in the company. Judgement was given in her favour. According to her case the shares were given to her by her father, the late Mr. James Shipstone, in April, 1920, and vested in her brothers, Mr. J.H. and Mr. R.A. Shipstone, as trustees. In November of the same year, and without her knowledge, her father had the names of the trustees entered in the company's books as proprietors of the shares, and plaintiff now asked for a declaration that the transaction was void. The Defence Messrs. J.H. and R.A. Shipstone, in their defence pleaded that they believed the shares were transferred by Mr. Shipstone to the plaintiff merely as his nominee for voting purposes and to be sold on his behalf. Mr. Shipstone made similar transfers to all his children and his brother, Sir Thomas, did the same to his children. There were also an exactly similar action in regard to a similar number of shares by another daughter of Mr. Shipstone, Mrs. Alice Wing, of Tavistock Avenue, Nottingham. Mr. Manning, K.C. for the plaintiffs, said that in 1920 Mr. James Shipstone and his brother, Sir Thomas, held the majority of the shares of the company. I March of that year, when the annual meeting was to be held, a notice was received that a Mr. Vinter desired election as a director. Voting Action. This did not meet with the approval of the brothers and in order to secure a majority of votes and defeat Mr. Vinter they transferred blocks of shares to their children instructing them how to vote. Without the knowledge and consent of the plaintiffs, Mr. Shipstone at a later date transferred their shares to Messrs. J.H. and R.A. Shipstone to pay the income to their sisters; but those ladies now claimed that the transaction was void. The relations between the plaintiffs and their brothers explained Councel, were friendly; but that trustees needed the guidance of Court. "Given Absolutely" Mr. Justice Luxmore, giving judgement, said he was satisfied plaintiffs were told by their father that the shares were given to them absolutely. There was no reservations and therefore the subsequent settlement was ineffective and the plaintiffs were the absolute owners of the shares. 2021 note (PC) - I didn't now that Mr. Vinter (presumably R.A.) was trying to become a Director in early 20's (against the wishes of the brothers - their "nephew" by Elizabeth (who married Arthur Vinter). Mentioning that the Red cross and St. John had raised a little over £7,000,000, the chairman remarked that this home was an instance of how the money was spent. But it was only one; there were 27 other homes, and up to last September £122,000 had been spent on their equipment. Fourth home in the County The speaker announced the receipt of a cheque for £25 from the employees of Messrs. F. B Atkins Ltd. Lady Titchfield proposed a cote of thanks to the Shipstone executors, describing the cheque from Messrs. Atkins employees as encouraging evidence of the widespread interest taken in Red Cross work. She could not speak gratefully enough of the generosity which had enabled the house to become a convalescent home. The situation, which might be within the heart of the country, was ideal. It was not easy to find a house that could accommodate 50 beds and a staff. This was the forth home open in the county. The other three were full. Mrs. Snell had told her how glad she was that her father's house was to be used for the purpose.32 |
