(Subject) Newspaper | 4 November 1970 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 4 November 1970. "A man who lived for the benefit of others" Freemasonry, the Portland Training College for the Disabled and the Boys' brigade were among the many organisations represented at the funeral of Lt. Cdr. George John Mackness at St. Jude's Church, Mapperley yesterday. A former High Sheriff of Nottingham, and Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Cdr. Mackness (78) was actively associated with a wide variety of organisations in the city and county. He was a prominent Freemason, and was provincial Grand Master of Nottinghamshire from 1953 to 1964. His wife, who died some years ago, was the youngest daughter of the late Sir Thomas Shipstone. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. H. Brincklow, the vicar of St. Jude's, and the address was given by the Ven. Brian Woodhams, Archdeacon of Newark and former vicar of St. Jude's. Cremation followed at Wilford Hill. Mr. Woodhams described Cdr. Mackness as "a truly splendid citizen and a lovable character whose life was lived for the benefit of others". He outlined his naval career, his business interests in the motor trade, his valuable work as an ARP Controller for the city during the last war, and as a Justice of the peace. "His spheres of public service was many and wide," added Mr. Woodhams. He also recalled Crd. mackness once admitting to him that his three loves were: FREEMASONRY - a career he so greatly enjoyed. He caried out his duties with dignity, charm and a deep sincerity. PORTLAND TRAINING COLLEGE - an organisation to which he never spared himself in numerous fund raising functions. "No-one has done more for Portland than he" said Mr. Woodhams. THE CHURCH - his kindness sprang from his deep and utter faith in Christian worship in a busy life. Mr. Woodhams spoke of his service, in particular, to St. Jude's of which he was a vicar's warden for many years. "George Mackness was the man he was because he was not afraid to be a Christian", added Mr. Woodhams. "We can only follow his example if we believe wholly in God". The family mourners were: Mrs. K. I. Ferguson (daughter), Miss Catriona Ferguson (grand-daughter), Mr. Derrick Mackness, Mr. Tony Mackness and Mr. John mackness (sons). Mrs. M. Mackness (sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. J. Mackness (nephew and niece), and Mr. J. Selby (cousin). ... (then representatives of all the organisations) Included J. L. Shipstone (also representing Mrs. Dillys Woodhouse) as well as R.H.A. Pykett ... Coun. J.A. Shipstone ... Mr. W. David Crane (representing Mrs. Eric Snell (BournemouthO) and Dr. T.B.S. Snell and Mr. W. David.47 |

Brewer Retires from Family Firm THE Great grandson of James Shipstone, founder of the Nottingham brewery, is retiring after a 40-year career with the 'family' business. James Mackness has said goodbye to the Star Brewery in New Basford, after working his way 'up the ranks' from junior brewer at Shipstones to deputy managing director of Greenalls Midland. He joined Shipstones in October 1949, after completing his National Service with the Navy and was appointed head brewer in 1975. (Photo in article) "James Mackness" In 1976 he took over as production director and was made deputy managing director of Greenalls midlands earlier this year. Mr. Mackness has seen a lot of changes in the brewery - and the industry - over the years. "The industry has changed quite considerably, especially with the advent of the rise in popularity of lager and keg beer", he said. He lives in Nottingham with his wife, Judith. The couple have two grown-up children, Nicola and Richard. "Retirement will give me more time for hobbies like gardening, fishing and travel", he said. Bur he is determined that he won't be severing links with the brewery altogether. "I would find that very difficult", he said. "After 40 years, it's a big slice of my life and I know I like the people here". Mentioned The Shipstones Brewery.10 |

Lucky Escape in Storm Horror (Photo - "James and Judith Mackness .. lucky to survive falling tree" photo 8029GC) A CHURCHWARDEN and his wife had a lucky escape on Christmas Eve when a tree, topples by gale force winds, fell on them. James and Judith Mackness, of Aslockton, were knocked unconscious, but escaped serious injury. The couple are recovering ay home after treatment at Grantham Hospital. They were returning home from visiting relatives at Branston with Mrs. Mackness' 90 year old aunt when they found the road near Knipton covered in debris. Mrs. Mackness said "There were a lot of twigs and branches on the road. It was extremely windy. Some of the boughs took two people to clear them so i got out to help my husband. "Suddenly there was a loud crack. We turned and saw this huge beech tree falling towards us. We were knocked out by the branches. "Several minutes later when we came to, we found the trunk had missed us by a couple of feet. We were very, very lucky". Mr. Mackness a retired Shipstone's Brewery director, was treated for a broken shoulder and received five stitches in a head wound. Mrs. Mackness was badly bruised. Worshippers at St. John of Beverley Church, Scarrington, where Mr. Mackness is churchwarden, first heard about the accident early on Christmas morning when they arrived for the morning service and found the church locked. Mrs Mackness said "My husband is very punctual and they were very surprised the church was closed. "We couldn't go to the church but the vicar came to us. "Christmas was certainly different this year. We stayed at home and friends rallied round and brought us food. But we are not complaining. We know we were very, very lucky it wasn't more serious". I will pay him 2/- a week for a month, 3/- second month, 4/- third month, 5/- fourth month. Any rise after this would depend upon his usefulness. Hours 9 am to 6 pm with an hour or so for meals. During the greater part of his time with me he was entrusted with the handling of all monies and his care and honesty in such matters impressed me very much. He leaves my employ owing to a curtailment of business as a result of the war. I greatly regret his departure and will be pleased to answer any questions future employers may wish to ask regarding him. I can strongly recommend his for any position where intelligence, honesty, and application are necessary. C.D. Randall M.C.I.B.& A. CD Randall & Co. Research | 13 December 1914 | Research:Letter from Belton Park, Grantham, on Sherwood Forester's 9th Battalion headed notepaper: "Dear Walter, I was delighted to hear from you and find that you had succeeded in obtaining a post. I trust it suits you and that by strict attention to your work you will gain the promotion you must naturally covet. I have often thought of you during the past few months and have wondered if you would ever write again. I have had a tremendous amount of work to get through here but I can look with pride on the splendid battalion I have been largely instrumental in raising. I am hoping to take them into the field soon when I am sure they will be keen on adding laurels to our history. My regiment have suffered very heavily since the war started. The 2nd Battalion (about 1500) are almost completely wiped out and now the 1st battalion are in the thick of the fray from India. Hundreds have already been admitted to hospital with frozen feet from letters I receive I am informed that a frost-bite is worse than a bullet wound. I hope will all my heart that you will succeed in getting the free scholar-ship. There is nothing like pegging-away when you are young and absorbing as much knowledge as possible. We all regret the time wasted in our youth and frequently grumble because our employers did not exact a greater attention to our duties. I do not think the war will last much longer. It is impossible for us all to stand the drain of valuable lives that are being sacrificed. The Germans have every available man in the field & if they have made no more headway by the end of January it is all up for them. The Russians French and now ourselves have an enormous reserve of men to pitch into the fray and once our advance begins it will not end until peace is declared. I am now a Lieutenant and expect to be promoted Captain in a week or two. Five of the men who used to visit us at the office have been killed and I am afraid many more will go under before the war ceases. I must send you a photograph before I leave for the front, for I feel that you would like a memento of the days when we were so closely associated together. With all good wishes Yours Sincerely C.D. Randall.9 |

Research | 22 March 1915 | Research: at 61 Forest Street, East Kirkby, NTT![]() Stamped "9th Service Battn The Sherwood Foresters" Dear Walter thanks for the letter. I looked for you along Beastmarket hill, both on Wednesday and Thursday, but failed to spot you. I was mounted on a yellowish horse both days. I am frightfully busy or I would write a letter. We expect to leave here next week end & I ought to be a corpse by about the end of April. Our 1st Battalion have been horribly cut-up in the neauvre chapelle fight and I daresay a good many more will bite the dust yet. If we slaughter one another at the rate we are going on at present the war will come to a stop for want of men on both sides. We must end the war before the Germans get their harvest in. Hope you are fit. I'll drop you a line from France but you had better watch the casualty list. Yrs Sincerely C D Randall Captain."9 |

(Subject) Newspaper | 28 August 1915 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 28 August 1915. Captain C.D. Randall With picture "Captain C.D. Randall, 9th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action, in the Dardanelles" (note that his home was 46 Trafalgar Road, Beeston according to Probate Calendar) "News has reached Beeston of the death in action of Captain C. D. Randall, of the 9th Sherwood Foresters. Charles Deschang Randall was born in the army in India in 1877, when his father was colour-sergeant of H Company of the 1st Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters. He was educated at the Duke of York's School and enlisted at 14 years of age as a drummer boy in the 1st Sherwood Foresters. Early in life he had an ambition to be a colour-sergeant of his father's company. He served through the South African war as colour-sergeant, and was awarded the D.C.M. Afterwards he was for 5 years regimental sergt.-major of the 1st Sherwoods. He was an all-round athletic, good at cricket, football, and hockey, and for several seasons figured with the Beeston Hockey Club. He was also a fine boxer, and excelled as a swimmer and rifle shot. He founded and edited the Regimental paper whilst with the 1st battalion in India, and wrote breezy humorous articles for various military papers in India, which we have often quoted in the Nottinghamshire Guardian. He rejoined the army as sergeant-major at the outbreak of the present war, and was soon made first-lieutenant, and was afterwards promoted temporary captain of the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. His death was practically contemporaneous with that of Captain Black." Walter added "From the Nottinghamshire Weekly Guardian dated August 28 1915" And wrote a line in 5 symbols of shorthand, underlined and dated 1913 & 1914, which he clearly didn't want anyone else to read.9 |

After very heavy fighting, in the course of which, the 1st Battalion Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, 29th Division, Major-General D. E. Cayley, C.M.G., commanding the division, did gallant service, he succeeded in the afternoon in overcoming the resistance of our troops about Doulieu and La Becque, forcing them- back in a north-westerly direction. As the result of this movement, a gap was formed in our line south-west of Bailleul, and bodies of the enemy who had forced their way through seized Outtersteene and Merris."16 |
