H. Shipstone More than £700 has been raised by St. Augustine's Church, New Basford, since July last for the renovation and decoration of the church, and a new west window has been given by Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Shipstone. Sunday next will be observed as a thank-offering day, and collections will be devoted to clearing a debt on Church expenses and to helping the Assistant Clergy Fund. The new window will be dedicated by the Bishop of Southwell in the morning. and the Very Rev. J.W. Conybeare (Provost of Southwell Cathedral) will preach at a thanksgiving service in the evening. The new window, which is of six lights and foils, and is designed to illustrate the landing and reception of St. Augustine at Ebbsfleet, in the Isle of Thanet, A.D. 597. St. Augustine is shown at the head of his band of white-robed monks, with King Ethelbert and his wife Bertha receiving them. The former are announced as "Strangers from Rome", and the King and Queen are listening to St. Augustine's sermon, which is being translated by an interpreter. Men of the bodyguard, warriors and councillors attend on the king and queen, and ships are shown in the background.27 |

| (Subject) Newspaper* | 25 May 1936 | Gertrude Turner and James Henry Shipstone were the subject of a newspaper article on 25 May 1936. BISHOP DEDICATES NEW WEST WINDOW Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Shipstone's Gift Yesterday was a day of thanksgiving at St. Augustine Church, New Basford, Nottingham. Since last year, more than £700 has been raised for the renovation and decoration of the church, and a new West window has been given by Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Shipstone. The new window, which is of six lights and foils, and is designed to illustrate the landing and reception of St. Augustine at Ebbsfleet, in the Isle of Thanet, A.D. 597, was dedicated by the Bishop of Southwell (Dr. H. Mosley) at the morning service, and in the evening, the Rev. J.W. Conybeare (Provost of Southwell Cathedral) preached at a special thanksgiving service. The donors of the windows were among the large congregation present at the dedication service, and the Rev. T.W. Peak (former vicar) and Rev. B.S. Ainley (vicar) took part in the service. Public Worship a Duty The Bishop in his sermon said the people of St. Augustine's had a church of which they might well be proud, and by the dedication of a new west window they had added enormously to its beauty and dignity. Beautiful surroundings in churches were fitting most of all because of what was due to God, and because they should help us to see God better, to realise more fully His beauty, His truth and goodness. Speaking of the main purpose of public worship - to honour and glorify God - the Bishop said there was a danger in the re-action of the old idea of Sunday of the puritanical view, that we should forget the main purpose of Sunday to worship God. However much we might value healthy recreation and open-air advantages that were so much appreciated today. We should fail sadly if, first of all, we did not recognise our duty of honouring and worshipping God. Worship should be the expression, not only of our attitude towards God, but our attitude towards life.28 |
