(Subject) Newspaper | 24 July 1896 | Arthur Vinter was the subject of a newspaper article on 24 July 1896. Woodhouse Grove School Annual Prize Distribution The school, which is under the supervision of the Wesleyan Conference, dates from 1812, and its latest year has been amongst the best in its history. ... Dr.Vinter then gave an address, and at the outset remarked that his object was to give his hearers a true and faithful account of the life of the place. He used the word "life" advisedly, because the word education had become corrupt, and did not now mean all that they were doing in a large boarding school like that. The word had become degraded to mean simply the imparting of so much knowledge, or so much memory work, whereas they had to do with boys, not machines to be operated upon, nor slaves to be driven, but living souls having tastes and tendencies, passions, prejudices, minds and memories, all of which are required to be trained. These qualities were in just the same condition as their physical frames - expanding but not fully developed - and in a boarding school like that they made it their business and duty to find out in what directions they could best develop them, and then set themselves to do the work in the best possible way they could. ... the true basis of character could only be found in the religion of the Lord Jesus Christ (Applause). Some people would probably think him an antiquated Puritan for expressing such a view, but the longer he lived and the more he felt it so. Thirteen years ago, he came to Woodhouse Grove with the conviction and it was never deeper or more intense than it was at the present time. Apart from religion, it was impossible to form true and noble character for life. ... The prize distribution ceremonies ended with the singing of the National Anthem, and the giving of three hearty cheers for Dr. and Mrs. Vinter.12 |

(Subject) Newspaper | 12 February 1915 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 12 February 1915. The Late Dr. Vinter Funeral at Woodhouse Grove Dr. G. G. Findley's Tribute The high respect and esteem in which the late Dr. Arthur Vinter, of Apperley Bridge, was held, was manifested at the funeral which took place on Friday. Deceased was for many years Headmaster of the Woodhouse Grove School at Apperley Bridge, and was closely identified with Wesleyan Methodism. Prior to the interment service was held at Woodhouse Grove Chapel, at which the Rev. Dr. G. G. Findlay (principal of Headingley Wesleyan College), Rev. Dr. Shaw Banks, Rev. Joseph Bonsal (resident minister at Woodhouse Grove), and the Rev. W. Hemmingway Shaw (of Idle) officiated. As mourners entered the chapel, Mr. Norman Strafford (organist and choirmaster) played Chopin's Funeral March. The hymns played were "Give me the wings of faith" and "Now the labourer's task is o'er". An address was delivered by the Rev. Findlay, who said they were met together to mourn a great loss, and one that was deeply felt by all of them. The life which had been drawn to a close left a splendid example for them to follow. He (Dr. Findlay) did not propose to dwell on the life of him who they had lost. That would be a long and great story. The monument to Dr. Vinter was in the school close by, which he had developed and ruled for some thirty years with sedulous care and affection. Into that work he put the whole strength and fulness of his heart and mind, and as long as it lasted it would be his memorial. He had much to give it - a highly trained mind, the wealth of a noble character, and of a fine and generous character. He had a tender, affectionate and great heart, and a resolute will. His reward was great, and it would be greater. He (Dr. Findlay) thought there was no calling in life of which it were more eminently true than that of a worthy schoolmaster to say that "his works do follow him." In Dr. Vinter there was an inner secret, the faith of a simple Christian; a life of trust and secret fellowship with the Unseen. If he were present he would say to all those who loved him best "Be comforted, all is well." To those who were younger he would say "Choose God for your guide, build upon the rock, be good and faithful unto death, and yours shall be a crown of life that fadeth not away." At the close of the service the organist played the Dead March in "Saul." The last rites at the graveside were performed by the Rev. Dr. Findlay. The family mourners were - Mrs. Vinter (widow) Reginald Edward and Norman Vinter (sons), Mr. and Mrs. Gurteen, Mr. and Mrs. Selka, Mr. James W. Vinter, the Rev. R.K. Vinter, Mr. J. Shipstone, Miss Shipstone, Mrs. E. Cattle, Mr. J. Selby, and Miss Fowler. Amongst other friends ... Mr. T.W. Smith Secretary of the Rawdon Golf Club of which Mr. Vinter was president), the staff and pupils of the school also attended. Anecdote | "My great-aunt, Elise Marguerite (Rita) Whitehead b1895 married Edward (Teddy) Vinter. I think he died of influenza in the 1920. They never had any children and Auntie Rita never remarried. She was a widow for the best part of 60 years. We used to visit her in Ilkley when I was young. She had a flat overlooking the Grove. We had a big family dinner there once a year just before christmas. I remember we played Newmarket and Old Maid. I was born in Rawdon and my dad in Apperley Bridge. I think my dad and my uncles went to Woodhouse Grove."4 | |

(Subject) Newspaper | 18 November 1921 | He and Norman Odell Vinter were the subject of a newspaper article on 18 November 1921. Proposed Changes to Motor Cycling Club ... How the "House" system will work An interesting discussion arose on the arrangements for next season's work. The Chairman observed that they had come to the conclusion that reliability trials are no longer the success they had been at one time. They had 188 members, of the Club, but only a comparatively small number entered for reliability trials. Mr. N.O. Vinter and his brother Mr. C.E. Vinter, had brought forwards an interesting proposal to to develop the social side of the club, and at the same time to retain the competitive spirit. Mr. N.O. Vinter, in explaining the scheme, said that the idea was to introduce the old public school system of houses. Each house in the club should be appointed to arrange their own features in competition with other houses, and they might introduce a little romance in the manner of naming the houses. Mr. C.E. Vinter referred to the general tendency to cut down trials and said they were seeking to make the club attractive to the man in the street. He accordingly proposed that, in order to foster the social life of the Club, a house competition should be inaugurated between the various existing centres, the winner being the club which organised the most successful and best run, open air social , motor-cycle and light car event of the year. He also proposed that a committee of three should be appointed to act as judges, and that they should base their decisions upon the following points: (1) Financial success; (2) attendance, ladies and gentlemen; (3) popularity; (4) originality; and also that the dates for the event be set aside by the committee, the houses to ballot for choice. Names of the "Houses" The proposal aroused considerable discussion. The Chairman pointed out that the only trials which the club intended to run as a "Club" were the novice trial, the hill climb, and the speed trial. With the others omitted it would be found that a number of trophies would be available for other purposes, subject, of course, to the consent of the donors. Mr. Vinter suggested that the only recognition of success to the house should be a silk flag, which he and his brother would like to have the honour of providing. It was finally decided to accept the scheme as outlined for the coming season, and to divide the club into 4 houses, in place of the six districts of which it is at present constituted. Ilkley will become known as the Romans: The Bingley section, with which the Bradford section will become incorporated, will be known as the Corinthians; Otley and Menston districts will be given the name of the Trojans, and Keighley will form a separate house under the name of the Barbarians.16 |

(Subject) Newspaper | 27 March 1925 | Charles Edward Vinter was the subject of a newspaper article on 27 March 1925. Woodhouse Grove Sports Winners of Events The annual sports of Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge, were held on Wednesday afternoon. The weather was showery and the ground on the muddy side, but there was a good crowd of spectators. The judges were C.W. Towlson (headmaster), W. Crabtree and C.E. Vinter, and the time-keepers Messrs. J.D. Paulson and N.E. Strafford. Mr. R. Walker officiated as starter. ... Mr. Arthur Jessop, of Westcliffe, Rawdon, presented the prize cards, whilst C.W. Towlson presided. A vote of thanks to Mr. Jessop was moved by Mr. W. McBain who congratulated him on the successful manner in which he made time stand still. It was 20 years since he, McBain, was at the Grove, and his first recollection was of sitting in chapel with Mr. Jessop on one side and Mr. Vinter on the other, and he could truthfully say that Mr. Jessop had changed very little since that day. He thought that the secret of keeping young was due to his interest in Woodhouse Grove School and the manner in which he kept in touch with the boys at the school. Mr. C.E. Vinter, who seconded the vote, said Mr. Jessop has always shown an interest in the sport of the school and the boys knew they had a very enthusiastic supporter. ... Mr. Towlson moved a vote of thanks to the two old boys in Messrs. C.E. Vinter and W. Crabtree for their assistance as judges. ...18 |
