John Hooper
M, #509, b. 24 May 1818
| Father | Jeremiah HOOPER b. 29 Sep 1790 |
| Mother | Judith RUCK b. 17 Apr 1790, d. b 4 Jun 1859 |
| (Child) Baptism* | 24 May 1818 | John Hooper was baptised on 24 May 1818 at Naunton, GLS , John s. Jeremiah & Juditt HOOPER, Naunton, Labourer. They had already baptised a John in 1814 in Turkdean (and that John was still alive). I was expecting a Charles in 1818, as his age would indicate this should be Charles' baptism. As John is not reference again, I suspect this was Charles' baptism - they renamed the child Charles after the baptism.1,2 |

| Research | Research: Is this the right John? a) John bap 1814 Turkdean - another John bapt 1818 Turkdean (but same age as Charles who does not have a baptism)- did John 1 die? b) Father given as "carter" on marriage, when Jeremiah was an ag lab at best all his life. C) when we first see him, he is detached from the family and in Great Barrington. Parhaps he was of a family there? d) stated to be born Naunton in 1851. On the plus side: 1) No John burial 1814-1820 2) Says we was born in Turkdean in latter census' 3) Age generally matches 1814 baptism on Turkdean. 4) the 1818 John is hernceforth referenced as Charles. So a little uncertainity, but acknowledging a slip-up in 1818 baptism seals it for me. | |

| Mother | Emma Coombs b. 1855, d. bt 1 Oct 1943 - 31 Dec 1943 |
| Research | Research: This person is a likely fabrication based on someone finding a name "Thomas Hooper" in military records. There is no birth record of a Thomas Hooper to a Coombs (however spelled) having looked over a wide period. Would have been in the same institution as his slightly older siblings on death of his father - but was not. Military records talks of death information "sent to widow", and next of kin "Father, Thomas Hooper". Neither of these are true if this is the son of William & Emma Hooper. No evidence to support that there was a Thomas of this William & Emma, and positively contrary evidence in the military record. Hooper is far too common a name to make such assumptions. | |
