He was a storekeeper until retiring in 1988 and enjoyed DIY, cycling, gardening, reading and doing crosswords. He also enjoyed collecting model cars, walking and music, both classical and modern.

So this is a "new" sister, Hannah. This is the main proof of her existence other than her marriage to Joseph Baldock in 1850).

So this is a "new" sister, Hannah. This is the main proof of her existence other than her marriage to Joseph Baldock in 1850).

FATAL ACCIDENTS ON THE DRAINAGE WORKS

Two inquests were held before Wm. Brunner Esq., Coroner, on Tuesday at the Radcliffe Infirmary, on the bodies of two men, who ny accident had come to their deaths in connection with the drainage works, now being carried-out in this City.

Before the jury examined the bodies, the coroner said that both cases were of a very similar character, and they arose out of the great drainage works that were being carried out in their midst. It was almost wonderful, and perhaps they would arrive at the same conclusions as himself, that there were not more accidents considering the depth at which the great depth to which the works went, the different strata through which they passed, the varying influences of the atmosphere, and a variety of other circumstances which combined to render their work perilous at all times.

The case of George Hilton, an engine-driver on the drainage works in St. Aldgate's, whon was injured on the 14th September last. in St. Aldgate's, by falling down a trench there, was first taken.

Annie Hilton, of Floyd's Row, St. Aldgate's identified the body as that of her husband, who was aged 30 the 28th of last October, and who was employed by Mr. Alcock, one of the contractors.

Ellen, wife of Henry Attewell, gardener, of Floyd's Row said that she saw the deceased on crossing the plank which she thought was a little slippery, fall into the trench do a depth of nearly 20 feet. The deceased was perfectly sober, and on being got out, he did not complain of anybody having moved the plank.

Frederick Field, of 3 Speedwell Street, St. Aldgate's, bricklayer, who was employed by Mr. Alcock in St. Aldgate's on the 14th of September, said that he was at work in the trench within a few yards of where the deceased fell in. The depth of the trench was about 14 feet; after the deceased was pulled out, and had some brandy, he appeared little worse for his fall. He was stunned at the time, and, on being brought to the surface, he was taken to the Infirmary in a cab.

Mr. Lewis Morgan, the House Surgeon, said that when the deceased was brought to the surgery there was nothing to be seen but an abrasion on the left hip. He always complained of his back, and never said anything about but that he had fallen into the trench. He died on Monday morning at about seven o'clock, and on making a post-mortem examination that morning he found softening of the spinal chord and the brain, resulting from the injury he had received. The deceased was in a very wasted condition when he died.

The Jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death".18

yesterday afternoon week, Mr. Coroner Brunner and a jury met at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford to inquire into the deaths of George Hilton and John Merry, who both died in the House on Monday, from injuries received whilst at work on the Oxford Main Drainage. the jury having been sworn.

The Coroner said he had sworn one jury to investigate both cases because that would save others from participating from so unpleasant a duty. Both cases were somewhat similar character, and both arose from the great drainage works now being carried out, and which had been so long in progress. For his own part, he almost wondered, and probably that the jury would concur with him, that there had not been more accidents, because of the great depth to which the works went, the different strata through which they passed, the varying influences of the atmosphere, and a variety of other circumstances which combined to render their work perilous at all times. The Contractor (Mr. G. T. Acock) and the Engineer (Mr. W. H. White) were present to give them all the information they could. he did not anticipate any difficulty in the course of the inquiry, but felt it was their duty to investigate the circumstances as far as possible until they were satisfied there had been no wilful negligence or want of care on the part of those on whom responsibility of overseeing the work rested.

After the jurors had viewed the bodies, the following evidence was taken:

Hannah Hilton said she lived in Floyd's Row, St. Aldgate's; the deceased, George Hilton was her husband and he was 30 years of age. Three weeks before the accident happened, Tuesday the 14th September, he took work as an engine driver on the drainage under Mr. Acock.

Ellen, wife of Mr. Henry Attewell, a gardener, also living in Floyd's Row said she saw the deceased on the day of the accident several times, and again about a quarter past six at his work, which was in a garden near the row. She shortly afterwards went into the row and saw the deceased as he was crossing on a plank fall into the cutting, which was nearly 20 feet deep. She saw no-one near him. The plank did not shift. He was got out quickly and taken to the Infirmary. He seemed quite sensible, and made no complaint.

The Coroner said the deceased bore an excellent character.

Frederick Field, bricklayer 3 Speedwell Street, St. Aldgate's, was at work on the 14th September in St. Aldgate's. He saw the deceased several times attending to the engine. At the time he fell into the cutting witness was working at the bottom, a few yards off, and picked him up. The cutting was about 14 feet deep from where he fell to the surface. He did not appear injured at the time, with the exception of being stunned. He was raised to the surface by a chair and four ropes, and was taken by cab to the Infirmary, after some brandy had been given to him.

Mr. William Lewis Morgan, the House Surgeon, said deceased was brought in on the evening of September 14th. There was no abrasion, and no external appearance of injury except a bruise on the head. he complained of his hip, and said he had fallen. he died about 7 a.m. on Monday, and from a post-mortem examination, witness found a softening of the spinal chord and the brain, from the injury, which was sufficient to cause death.

Mr. White having expressed an opinion that the plank was safe as could be expected, the jury immediately returned a verdict of accidental death.19

Alleged Attempted Suicide

George Thomas Hilton 34 years of age, a motorman, cut this throat yesterday afternoon at his house, 13 Herbert Street, Gateshead. The man had been out of work for a few days and was depressed in consequence. Formerly employes on the trams at Stockton, he came to Gateshead three weeks ago. His injuries were serious, and he was taken to Newcastle Infirmary.18

Holbeach Funeral

The funeral took place at Holbeach cemetery on Monday of Mrs. Florence Ann Hilton of 63, Station Road, Holbeach who died the previous Thursday at the age of 74.

Her husband George Thomas Hilton died 40 years ago, and for the past 22 years Mrs. Hilton made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Hilton

She was a native of Caythorpe, but resided in Fleet for many years before coming to Holbeach, and was a regular attendant at Fleet Parish Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Union Church and burial will be in Union Cemetery. Mr. Hilton, a native of Gedney Dyke, Lincolnshire, England, is survived by four sons, Elmer Hilton of Indianapolis, George Hilton of Arcadia, Arthur Hilton of Muncie, James Hilton of Selma; a foster son, Elmer Hilton of near Windsor; three daughters, Mrs. Edward Dick, Mrs. Charles Norton of Selma, Mrs. Frank Glaze of Anderson; twenty-nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.9

(the John Hilton is almost certainly his brother. John does marry a Hannah, but not until after his wife at that time Ann died. Not aware of any other surviving brothers marrying a Hannah.

Hannah is therefore probably a sister. There was a Susannah born 1817 but she would have been a Clarke in 1835, so not her.

So this is a "new" sister, Hannah. This is the main proof of her existence other than her marriage to Joseph Baldock in 1850).2

There is a DNS connection to me from children of this Jane.
Jane with a father William born in Elm are in short supply.

Only 1 fits, but the dates are "rather out". after 1951 census.

Normally see this sort of thing if a wife dies and husband remarries a younger woman of the same name.

In summary - there is a DNA connection, and everything fits apart from Jane's age on marriage and subsequent census.

Either the ages were "called wrongly" or Edmund Hall married a different (but still related) Jane Hilton.

(the John Hilton is almost certainly his brother. John does marry a Hannah, but not until after his wife at that time Ann died. Not aware of any other surviving brothers marrying a Hannah.

Hannah is therefore probably a sister. There was a Susannah born 1817 but she would have been a Clarke in 1835, so not her.

So this is a "new" sister, Hannah. This is the main proof of her existence other than her marriage to Joseph Baldock in 1850).3

Pretty Wedding at Moulton

A charming wedding was celebrated at All Saints church. Moulton on Saturday afternoon. Miss Alice Alma Sporton, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Sporton, School-Lane was the bride (no she wasn't as her name was Eveline) and Mr. Maurice Charles Hilton youngest son of Mrs. and the late Mr. G. Hilton, of Holbeach, the bridegroom.

Miss Sporton, whose was given away by her father, was attired in a close-fitting dress of white cloque, with train and veil held in place by gardenias, and carried a bouquet of lilies and trailing fern.

Her two sisters the Misses Eunice and Edith Sporton were bridesmaids.They wore tasteful dresses of gold taffeta, with headdress of spring flowers, whilst a third attendant was Miss Janet Middlebrook of Spalding, the bride's niece, who wore white taffeta and a poke bonnet trimmed with spring flowers. The elder bridesmaids carried bouquets and the younger one a posy of spring blossoms. The bridegroom presented each with an ivory-bound prayer-book.

The bride's cousin, Mr. Alec Bothamley was the best man.

The choral service was conducted by the Vicar (the Rev A. H. Partridge). Mr. Gordon Wright, presiding at the organ, rendered appropriate music and accompanied the hymns "Lead us, Heavenly father" and "The Voice that breathed o'er Eden".

Following a reception at the bride's home, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton left for their home at Fulbeck.

For upwards of 12 years, the bride who is a popular personality at moulton, has been employed by Messrs. J.T. White and Sons.

On the occasion of the Spalding Hospital Carnival two years ago the bride and her sister, Miss Eunice Sporton were among the six finalists from whom the queen of the carnival were selected.

Among the many presents received was a hand-embroidered linen tablecloth from the directors and staff of Messrs. J. T. White and Sons. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a leather handbag with gold clasp, and that of the bride to the bridegroom a gold wristlet watch.

The staff of the Sleaford section of the Prudential Assurance Co., with whom the bridegroom was employed sent a silver cake stand and fellow workers of J. T. White and Son gave a Lloyd loom chair.

Brakes case

Maurice Charles Hilton of 21, West Cobgate, Moulton, was summoned for using a motor vehicle when the brakes were not properly maintained in efficient working order, and also for driving a good vehicle and not keeping log book records.
In respect of the brakes, Hilton's employers, Wrights Bakeries, were also summoned. The offences were at Long Sutton on May 15.
For the prosecution, Mr. S. J. Green said in regard to the brake, both driver and the owner were held to be using the vehicle.
Mr. L.H. Holroyde, for the defence, said in law both the owner and driver were responsible. The deficiencies of the brakes were not a serious matter. The handbrake was not effective, but was easily adjusted, and the footbrake was quite efficient.
Hilton was fined £3 10s in all. Wrights Bakeries fined £3.12
